with Children

[26-minute video]

Adults caring for children and a loved one with Alzheimer's, or any type of dementia, learn tips on how to: handle caring for both, talk to children about Alzheimer's, incorporate children into care, and when to intervene to keep the child and the person with the disease safe.

Although there are several stages of Alzheimer's disease, the Mackenzie Meets Alzheimer's Awareness Program makes it easy for children by keeping the discussion to the three main stages of the disease: mild, moderate, and severe.

As the disease progresses, the person who has the disease loses more and more of their ability to function.

The Mild Stage is characterized by forgettfulness - forgetting names, places, and how to do activities the person usually knows.

The Moderate Stage is characterized by new behaviors such as saying the same things over and over, wandering aimlessly, and acting scared or grouchy.

In the Severe Stage, communication is difficult as the person loses the ability to talk, walk, and eat.

You might ask,

why did we create the Mackenzie Meets Alzheimer's Awareness Program?

Alder & Brenda are passionate about helping families who have a loved one with Alzheimer's or any type of dementia. They created a video series and picture book that will equip countless families with the tools they need to have positive intergenerational interactions, thus improving the quality of life for everyone involved.

They're very excited to share their Mackenzie Meets Alzheimer's initiatives with you.

As a Hospice Counselor, Alder experienced the impact of Alzheimer's first hand when her mother was diagnosed. Her niece at the tender ages of 7, noticed subtle changes in her Gran and yearned to understand. She was upset when her beloved Gran accidentally displaced the monsters she had drawn.

Knowing the limited resources available to help children comprehend and interact with loved ones affected by Alzheimer's, Alder enlisted the assistance of her friend and colleague, Brenda, and they used their backgrounds in Music Therapy, counseling, education, nursing, songwriting, and publishing to create the Mackenzie Meets Alzheimer's Program.

It is a unique program because:
